RT Infrastructure Solutions welcomes the award of signalling ES4 design & surveying for the development of the Copthall Connection Project, a significant rail infrastructure scheme designed to provide a new rail link between Network Rail’s Chiltern Main Line and the future Copthall Sidings facility near West Ruislip. The proposal will play an important role in supporting the delivery of HS2 by increasing the use of rail freight for the transportation of construction materials.
The scheme will create a new connection into the Copthall railhead, allowing engineering and freight trains to access the sidings directly from the national rail network. The facility is intended to serve as a key logistics hub, enabling material delivery trains to support major infrastructure construction activities while reducing reliance on road transport.
As outlined within the project design specification, the works include the installation of a new double-ended set of points, the introduction of new signalling infrastructure, modifications to existing signalling assets, and upgrades to train protection and warning systems. The project will also introduce bi-directional signalling operation between West Ruislip and the new siding connection, providing greater operational flexibility for freight movements.
The development has been designed to support Network Rail-compliant freight trains serving the HS2 programme, with train movements controlled from Marylebone IECC. The connection will facilitate the efficient movement of construction materials while maintaining compliance with current railway safety, signalling and operational standards.
The project incorporates a wide range of new and upgraded assets, including signalling location cases, track circuits, AWS and TPWS equipment, telecommunications infrastructure, signalling power supplies and associated civil engineering works. The proposed arrangement also includes new train detection systems, modern points equipment and additional operational safeguards designed to maintain the highest standards of railway safety and reliability.
Environmental considerations have been embedded throughout the scheme development process, with specific attention given to ecological constraints, responsible construction practices and compliance with environmental legislation and Network Rail standards.
The current programme indicates a target commissioning window between 2028 and 2030, subject to final project development and approval milestones.
At RT Infrastructure Solutions, we recognise the important role that signalling, rail systems and infrastructure specialists play in delivering projects of this scale. Schemes such as Copthall demonstrate how collaboration across the rail industry can support major national programmes while creating lasting improvements to network capability, operational efficiency and sustainable freight transportation.
