Network Rail’s overall aim with the Leeds North West Stations Platform Extension works project, was to increase seating capacity on trains running on the Airedale and Wharfedale lines.

As the platforms at Shipley, Guiseley, Menston and Burley-In-Wharfdale were too short to accommodate the longer trains that could provide this capacity, a series of platform extension works were required to allow six car trains to stop at these stations.

With Shipley Station platforms 1 & 4 only having a useable platform-lengths of 102m and 98m respectively, the project sought to extend these platforms to accommodate 2×3-car Class 331 trains of 143m length, without needing to restrict the number of doors that could be opened.

The same operational constraints were prevalent at Burley-in-Wharfedale (platforms 1 & 2), Menston (platform 1), and Guiseley (platforms 1 & 2). After a competitive tendering process, RT Infrastructure Solutions were once again selected by AMCOGiffen as their signalling delivery partner for these works, with the additional P Way IBJ works added to the scope. The package of works included all signalling management, signalling installation, prep-testing and test & commissioning deliverables included within scope once again. All installation work was completed to Network Rail standard NR/L3/SIG/11303 and was checked by RTIS signalling supervisors with the relevant hand over certificates passed over to qualified SWTH test teams. Prior to commissioning, all signalling circuits were subject to an altered circuit pre-check and new cables were tested. During the Tester-In-Charge led changeover of equipment, all affected contacts and circuits were strap and function tested and all affected line circuits were through tested. RTIS successfully installed and commissioned all new signalling and P Way works to the agreed client budget with zero accidents/incidents reported throughout the duration of the works.
