Teddington Station, a key transportation hub in Greater London operated by Southwest Railway, underwent significant upgrades to improve accessibility and modernize its infrastructure.
This initiative was part of a broader project funded by the Department for Transport’s ‘Access for All’ scheme, which aimed to make rail travel more inclusive for all passengers, including those with reduced mobility, people with pushchairs, and cyclists.
The project at Teddington Station focused on the installation of new lifts on either side of the existing bridge structure, providing full step-free access to both platforms. This upgrade ensured that all passengers could move freely and safely throughout the station, regardless of their mobility needs.
In addition to the lifts, the project also involved the installation of new lighting and CCTV systems around the station and the lifts. These enhancements not only improved safety and security for passengers, particularly during night-time travel, but also contributed to a more comfortable and user-friendly station environment. The station’s existing electrical and telecoms infrastructure, including switchgear, lighting, and power distribution, had become outdated and no longer met the station’s operational demands.
RTIS was contracted to handle all telecoms activities and associated tasks, ensuring that the station’s communication systems were brought up to modern safety standards. The existing hybrid CCTV was modified to transfer recording of the existing cameras (digital and analogue) on to the new head end CCTV equipment. These upgrades improved energy efficiency and ensured reliable service, aligning Teddington Station with current technological and operational requirements. The works were successfully completed to the project budget, with an incident and accident-free installation and testing regime.
