Signalling GRIP 6-8 works Felixstowe Port

Felixstowe Port Felixstowe is Britain’s largest container port. It handles almost 50% of the containers moving through the UK’s major ports. There are two main container terminals at Felixstowe offering direct ship to shore container handling, the Trinity container terminal, at the northern end of the port and the Landguard terminal, at the southern end.

Currently 27% of the ports containers are moved by rail and the two existing rail terminals within the port are almost working at capacity. A proposed third rail terminal is required to handle the additional container business that will be generated, following the Felixstowe South reconfiguration.

The new third rail terminal will have a working length of 729m, together with a new permanent way connecting the rail terminal to the existing Up & Down North Quay Line. The rail terminal will be provided with seven sidings, a service line and a run around line with a heavy duty pavement area for the transfer of containers to road transport. A traverse will be installed at the head of the rail terminal.

As part of the Felixstowe Third Rail Terminal scheme RT Infrastructure Solutions Ltd was employed by Volker Fitzpatrick to undertake all of the signalling installation and testing works including the installation of a train overheight sensor. The scope of the works included the management of all signalling site activities and liaison with VolkerFitzpatrick Construction Engineers. RTIS provided an in-house signalling CRE and Network Rail approved TIC to successfully commission the project into working use.
