RTIS complete signalling works at Port of Felixstowe

As Britain’s largest container port, the Port of Felixstowe handles almost 50% of the containers moved through the UK’s major ports. With 27% of the port's containers then being moved by rail, the two existing rail terminals within the port were working at almost full capacity.

North Pole DepotIn order to cope with increasing demand, the Port of Felixstowe gained sufficient funding to build a new Third Rail Terminal. Work on the new terminal began in the early part of 2012 and this included major works for both civils and railways disciplines.

As of May 2013 the Third Rail Terminal is now fully operational with all civils and rail works completed. The new terminal has a working length of 729m, together with a new permanent way connecting the rail terminal to the existing Up & Down North Quay Line. The rail terminal has seven sidings, a service line and a run around line with a heavy duty pavement area for the transfer of containers to road transport. A traverser has been installed at the head of the rail terminal.

RT Infrastructure Solutions Ltd involvement in the Third Rail Terminal project was as a sub-contractor to Volker Fitzpatrick to undertake all of the rail signalling installation and SWTH prep-testing works involved with the scheme. There was also an additional requirement to install a train over height sensor. The scope of the works required RTIS to manage all of the signalling site activities and to also liaise with VolkerFitzpatrick Construction Engineers.

The RTIS scheme deliverables from a signalling perspective included:

  • Signalling CRE Management and supervision of all trackside works
  • Production of Work Package Plans, Task briefing and SSOW documentation
  • Procurement & Management of signalling materials
  • Alterations to existing track circuits & installation of new track circuits
  • Installation of new signals & Over height train sensor system
  • Installation of new Clamplock point machines
  • Signal Works Prep-Testing of complete signalling layout
  • Termination in location cases and REB
  • Removal of all redundant signalling materials
