RTIS successfully complete Signalling works at North Pole Depot

North Pole DepotNearly all of RT Infrastructure’s works at North Pole Depot were based around the government’s decision to proceed with the much anticipated Intercity Express Programme (IEP). The IEP programme was given the go ahead in November 2010 and put in place to procure new trains to replace the ageing Intercity 125 fleet that serves the ECML and WCML. The winning bidder for the IEP contract was Agility Trains, a consortium led by Hitachi with a train called the Hitachi Super Express.

After much consultation Hitachi decided to base its fleet within three depots, one of which was North Pole Depot that had originally served as a depot for Eurostar services. The depot had remained dormant since 2005, but had been maintained to an operational level should future need arise. After considering the existing infrastructure at North Pole Depot Hitachi decided that the existing lay out at North Pole would need significant alteration in order to accommodate its new class of trains.

In January 2013 RT Infrastructure Solutions were commissioned on behalf of VolkerFitzpatrick to undertake the controlled disconnection and removal of all signalling related equipment within North Pole Train Depot. This covered any area of over 2 square miles and included a vast range of signalling assets and cabling arrangements. Using previous knowledge of maintaining North Pole Depot, RT Infrastructure Solutions successfully undertook all recovery works within a 5 week period, on time and within its agreed budget.
